Two nights ago I had a conversation with a man 30 years old I'll call Darin.
He asked me where I work and I told him I have been unemployed way to long.
Darin grinned and then told me that he lost his job at the Chandler, Arizona
Intel plant recently. He said at least a thousand people have been marched
out of the plant. When I asked Darin why he thinks that our local newspaper
never reported mass termination he explained that it was because everyone
was "redeployed". Redeployment at Intel means that the employees are given a
certain time limit to apply and get another job at Intel. This is a
corporate set-up because there are no jobs. These employees are usually "let
go". Newspapers aren't interested when thousands of local workers are merely
"let go" so it's rarely reported.

Darin said that he didn't feel bad to leave Intel because the rank and order
system made it a miserable place to work. He seemed to think his severance
for 5 1/2 years of service will last until he finds another job. I told him
that he may luck out since he is still only 30 years old. He didn't look
surprised or puzzled when I made that statement.

Darin proceeded to tell me that he trained 3 Indian guys from Bangalore how
to handle his SAP programming work. Once they were trained the manager told
Darin that those 3 Indians can be hired for the same salary he is making.
His boss said that he can't justify keeping him when he can get 3 for the
price of one. It was soon after that conversation that Darin was redeployed.

I then asked him if he had ever heard of H-1B. DARIN SAID, "NO, WHAT IS
H-1B?"

CLUNK!

I spent some time telling him what H-1B was and how Intel was using H-1B and
L-1 visas together with oursourcing to replace American workers. Darin was
very interested and confirmed that Intel is moving operations to Bangalore.

I gave Darin my contact information and how to find my website to find out
more about what is happening to his career. He hasn't contacted me yet but
perhaps one day he will.

The reason I am describing this conversation is to show how clueless the
public is about H-1B. If someone like Darin doesn't know what H-1B is then
we have a long way to go to get the word out. He was totally clueless about
H-1B although he did understand that globalism is a threat to his career and
way of life. He just didn't know that globalism and H-1B are the same thing.
